We are pleased to work with Scotrail (Abellio) in providing both video relay (VRS) and video remote interpreting (VRI) services. This provides full access for the 1,000s of Deaf BSL users who travel by rail throughout the country for work or leisure purposes.

From 30th May 2019, Scotrail staff have access to our InterpreterNow app on their mobile devices where they can instantly contact an online interpreter wherever and whenever required. This could be on board while travelling or within any of the 361 stations. In addition to staff having access to the app, Deaf BSL users have the Scotrail ‘button’ in the directory on InterpreterNow app.

Watch our short video on the service here:
What can it be used for?
Deaf person may: Scotrail staff may:
• Check connection times/ platform choices • Inform passenger of change of stop
• Report lost property • Explain where to go when they alight from the train
• Ask for directions  • Respond to queries during journey

Andrew Marshall-Roberts, Access & Inclusion Manager with Scotrail said

“We’re delighted to be collaborating with InterperterNow on this project and taking a huge step toward access and integration through rail travel.”

Andy Irvine, Operations Director (Scotland) with InterpreterNow said

“Providing access for passengers by means of a simple app, for many may seem trivial, but for those who rely on British Sign Language (BSL), can be very reassuring and empowering. Just knowing that access in your own language is available throughout your journey is not far off ground-breaking. We at InterpreterNow are delighted to have been working with Scotrail on this solution.”

Janis McDonald, Chief Officer at deafscotland said:

“deafscotland is pleased to see this collaboration between ScotRail and Interpreter Now and actively support the roll out across all ScotRail activity. We have campaigned for access, equality and citizenship for all those affected by deafness. We see the British Sign Language (Scotland) Act 2015 promoting and supporting BSL development and ScotRail’s actions as a huge step towards access and integration through travel. We encourage BSL users to register with Interpreter Now and take advantage of this progress and other service providers to consider similar action.”
